Labelsets¶
A labelset defines the categories available during annotation and analysis.
Design labels around the question¶
Choose the lowest level of detail that can be applied consistently. A useful label scheme has:
- unambiguous names
- a stable code for export
- a short ecological definition
- inclusion and exclusion examples
- an Unknown or Unclear option when appropriate
Avoid mixing incompatible levels, such as broad substrate groups and fine taxonomic species, without an explicit hierarchy.
Imported and working labelsets¶
For CoralNet data:
- the import keeps an immutable origin snapshot
- the attached site visit receives its own working labelset
- mapping and edits happen in the working context
This preserves source provenance while allowing the ReefNetAI workflow to evolve.
Grouped mappings¶
Use a grouped mapping when detailed labels must roll up into a reporting space such as hard coral, soft coral, algae, other biota, and abiotic substrate. Review every unmapped label before training or exporting grouped cover.
